Hemoanima (我駆力, Gakuryoku) is a supernatural power that Sirei can pass down[1] to ordinary people to engage in combat against monsters in The Hundred Line, -Last Defense Academy-.
Description[]
Not much is known about the ability. Hemoanima is a supernatural blood-based power that allows its user to engage in battle using unique weapons of their choice. According to Sirei, stabbing oneself with a Hematomorphic Infusion Blade (Infuser for short) causes a miraculous power to flow through the body, replacing regular blood with Hemoanima. This was a half-lie however, as it was revealed shortly after that everyone has hemoanima inside them and the infusion blade just helps in activating it, and the Last Defense Academy students were the only selected few candidates who could wield hemoanima effectively without suffering from drawbacks, and these users also use Artificial Class Armor to compensate for their lack of effectiveness. A good example of a member who does suffer from drawbacks is Nozomi, as she has low hemoanima and because of this it would often lead to early rejection symptoms, and these rejection symptoms can only be lessened through feeding her more hemoanima.
This power is then harnessed and shaped into physical form, creating armor and weapons tailored to the user, these are known as Class Weapons and Class Armor.
Sirei attributes the Infusers used to activate Hemoanima to human invention, calling them the "pinnacle of human achievement and ingenuity." Additionally, activating Hemoanima for the first time grants the user a Specialist Skill, further enhancing their combat capabilities. Examples includes Takumi with his Specialist Skill of Redo, or other examples such as Shouma whose Specialist Skill focuses on defense, and this was reiterated by the words of others as they are aware of each other's specialist skills. In the Steady-Fundamental route, it is revealed that Hemoanima users can possess more than one Specialist Skill. Hiruko exemplifies this, as she demonstrates a personal variant of Special Redo in addition to her Special Discipline. Takumi also acts as an example to this, by possessing Special Revenge as a Specialist Skill in addition to his Special Redo. Hiruko describes this phenomenon as similar to how some individuals excel at multiple subjects.
While the full nature of Hemoanima remains a mystery, it is used by both students of The Last Defense Academy and Invader commanders. Academy students activate it by stabbing themselves in the chest, while Invader commanders are known to slit their throats after doing some strange chant instead. Despite this difference in activation, both groups undergo transformation, gaining enhanced abilities and distinct physical changes, including possible red markings on their faces.
The fact that using the VR Training Machine will strengthen hemoanima, despite the students not being mentioned to use an Infuser before they do so, implies that it remains in the blood to some extent after it is dispelled. It is not clear how Hemoanima returns to being regular human blood after it is "dispelled" (as Sirei calls it) especially since the students appear to lose a lot of their regular blood during the transformation. It is possible that this is also done through the student stabbing themselves with the Infuser again, and that this is what led to Hiruko attempting the Finishing Blow, to attempt to suck out the Commander's Hemoanima with her already-active Infuser.
Weaknesses or Side Effects:[]
- *Depersonalization – Users may experience a sense of detachment from their identity, as seen with Takumi Sumino, who subtly fails to recognize himself in the mirror.
- *Self-inflicted activation – The ability requires the user to stab themself in the chest, which can be psychologically challenging and leaves an initial vulnerability.
*Some weaknesses are unverified or not fully understood.
Usage[]
In order to activate the ability, the user has to stab themself in the heart (chest) with a Hematomorphic Infusion Blade, called Infusers for short. Takumi Sumino, Eito Aotsuki, and Gaku Maruko are the only students that has been explicitly shown performing this act, but all transformed users have a hole in their uniform at the center of the chest, implying that the same method is used by all.
The Commanders also appear to utilize Hemoanima, though through a different means. The first Commander shown was able to activate the ability by cutting its own neck, bypassing the need for an Infuser entirely. While this method appears specific to Commanders, it is not strictly exclusive. It is suggested that members of the Last Defense Academy can also activate Hemoanima without an Infuser, though it involves significantly more risk. This is illustrated in one route where Eito, trapped in a locked cage, managed to activate his Class Weapon and Class Armour by delivering a heavy impact—most likely a stab—to his own heart. This rare event was likely only successful due to his Specialist Ability, Fortunetelling. Hiruko supports this by explaining, "The Infuser only served as a catalyst to activate our Hemoanima in order to use our Class Weapons, but it can also be activated without an Infuser by dealing a strong impact at the heart."
After stabbing themself, the user will be surrounded by blood and become completely submerged in it. Their appearance magically changes and they will be given a unique weapon which is a manifestation of their own innate strengths, called a Class Weapon, which they can use to battle and kill monsters. The user can have more than one weapon, such as Darumi Amemiya wielding several knives and Takemaru Yakushiji having both a motorcycle and a spiked bat. The user's outfit will be changed to a battle uniform[2], called Class Armour, with the design varying by the gender of the user. The uniform can be slightly modified. For example, Takemaru Yakushiji's and Yugamu Omokage's have a longer coat than the standard male uniform, and Hiruko Shizuhara's and Kurara Oosuzuki's have a longer skirt than the standard female uniform.
The male uniform consists of a black gakuran with white accents, a pin on either side of the collar, and a ripped hole where the user stabbed himself in the heart. It also includes a white armband; black pants with a white band around the right upper thigh, a belt, and black, geta-style combat boots. A black cape with white text on it is shown sometimes, but not always. The female uniform consists of a black, long-sleeve sailor fuku with white accents and a white bow, along with a hole in the same place on the chest. It also includes a white armband; a black, above-knee-length skirt with a belt, black heeled combat boots, and, like the male uniform, sometimes a cape. All armbands have a single distinct numeral on them, such as 零 (0). The uniform also includes a white bodysuit/white gloves in both the male & female uniforms of the main cast (with the exception of Nozomi who doesn't wear the Class Armor uniform). These are most notably seen on characters like Tsubasa & Hiruko which show that they wear gloves underneath the uniform.
Physically, the user has red markings around their eyes and sometimes on other parts of their face, such as their forehead or down their cheeks.[3][4] In addition to the hole in the chest, the space in the chest around it is changed too, looking similar to a exposed pectoral muscle coloured black, with it extending slightly onto the arm like the pectoral muscle does. (It appears more prominently in some students, such as Takemaru.)
One of the common abilities of Hemoanima is partial immortality - even if a user has been given a fatal wound, their Hemoanima can be used to recreate their bodies using the Rejuvenation Machine in the Academy in a few minutes. Sirei maintains a fleet of coffin-shaped drones to retrieve students in critical condition in the school for revival.
Curiously, a symptom of Hemoanima seems to be depersonalization - Takumi notices that, despite looking the same, he does not recognize himself in the mirror, unnerving him.
History[]
Hemoanima, also known as cryptoglobin, is a special power that originates from the planet Futurum. This mysterious blood-bound energy could only be wielded by specialized individuals later known as Paragons (called Commanders by the Exodus Project), granting them immense combat capabilities. The power of the Paragons, combined with how seemingly random Paragons would be born among Futurans, led them to have both a strong warrior tradition among Paragons, who often carry themselves as feudal monarchs who maintain peace and security through strength, and a very diplomatic and peaceful society, as Paragons generally wished to avoid conflict among themselves and their followers given the sheer amount of destructive force they could unleash - in all of recorded Futuran history, there has only been over 12 inter-Futuran major wars between nations. Then, a wave of human colonists on the Artificial Satellite attempted to colonize Futurum. The human colonists were hostile to the Futurans out of paranoia, hate, and fear of the fact that a world they believed perfect for human life was already inhabited and terraformed. Despite the advanced technological power the humans had over Futurum, the existence of cryptoglobin tipped the balance of power in favor for Futurans, allowing the native inhabitants to resist total domination by human forces. Despite this, large-scale warfare broke out, resulting in the destruction of numerous landscapes, cultures, and civilizations on Futurum.
Among the researchers studying cryptoglobin was Nozomi Kirifuji’s mother, a prominent scientist dedicated to unlocking its potential for humanity's use. Her experiments focused on finding safe and effective ways to transfuse cryptoglobin into human hosts. In her pursuit, she even used her own daughter, Nozomi, as a test subject—driven by a desperate hope to give humanity a fighting chance.
At a critical point during the conflict, a human recon team discovered a mysterious infant, later referred to in classified files as the Second Coming. This child produced perpetual, undying flames—capable of both fueling power systems and incinerating organic material with ease. It also possessed an extraordinarily high concentration of cryptoglobin, far exceeding any known sample. The discovery of this child marked a turning point: thanks to its unique physiology, researchers achieved a massive breakthrough in cryptoglobin studies.
However, this event coincided with tragedy. In Nozomi's mother's case, she wasn't needed anymore—since the research team had the baby now, and her simple experiments wouldn't help in the eyes of humanity. Abruptly discharged from her post under undisclosed circumstances, she fell into despair and ultimately took her own life. While the full details remain unclear, the baby’s arrival and the sudden shift in research priorities were likely linked.
The child’s DNA became the foundation for a new generation of cryptoglobin-based technologies, it was used to ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████ ████
In the aftermath, humanity’s representatives—guided by the Artificial Satellite—oversaw the construction of a specialized facility known as The Last Defense Academy. It was designed not merely as a military installation, but as a school. This choice was made to reflect the symbolic wish of the Second Coming: to live a normal school life, a desire granted under Sirei’s watchful supervision. Every detail of the academy—from the uniforms to the daily structure—was tailored to match this vision.
Advanced facilities were also integrated into the academy to enhance Hemoanima-related abilities, enabling weapon growth, skill refinement, and more.
Nozomi Kirifuji, despite lacking strong cryptoglobin levels or immediate connection to the project, managed to infiltrate the room facilitating the Exodus Project and voluntarily joined the academy. She was then teleported to the institution via a containment capsule along with the rest of the new recruits. Although her cryptoglobin levels were considered insufficient, she could still wield Hemoanima with the help of an Artificial Class Armor, a support system designed to amplify and stabilize her otherwise fragile connection to the power.
Trivia[]
- It can be noted that most of the weapons seen so far have spikes on the handles of the weapons.
- It is unknown if Takemaru's motorcycle also has spikes or not.
- In addition to having spikes, the weapons have an animal on them responding to each student, which can reflect their personality and/or gameplay style. The list follows:
- Takumi Sumino has a snake wrapped around the hilt of his sword, which brings to mind the Ouroboros that connects to Takumi’s power of rewinding time as well as possibly referencing how Takumi himself will be forced to repeat the 100 days at the academy over and over again in order to achieve multiple endings.
- Yugamu Omokage's handles on his blades have a lizard on the sides which refers to, according to his Japanese birthday tweet, that his body has been heavily modified and replaced which means that like a lizard with its tail he is easily able to remove as well as replace his limbs.
- Eito Aotsuki's scythe has a ladybug/ladybird on its end, representing Eito's luck motif particularly shown in his Special Ability.
- Kurara Oosuzuki's shovel has a beaver on the blade that plays into her gameplay style of mainly being a crafter and constructing things on the field, as beavers construct dams. Not only that but it’s poetic that the high class rich girl among rich girls would do something considered lower class people do.
- Tsubasa Kawana's jeep has a horse at the front, symbolizing her role as a mounted unit and high movement. Additionally, a car's engine power is measured with horsepower.
- Takemaru Yakushiji has a bird on the side of his bike, which reflects his high movement and desire to be free.
- Moko Mojiro's mace has a bear on it, which reflects on Moko's caring and protective personality while referencing the bear hug move in wrestling.
- Shouma Ginzaki's mecha has a dog as the centrepiece, as the mecha serves to protect its' user like how dogs protect their owners seen in his Special Ability that increases attack for every point of damage taken and references his actual dog, who he says in the intro is his only friend.
- Kako Tsukumo’s rifle resembles an alligator.
- Ima Tsukumo’s wings depict intertwined talons which most likely resemble crow’s feet.
- Kyoshika Magadori’s katanas has wolves on them.
- Hiruko Shizuhara’s battle axe has two scorpion tails intertwined.
- Darumi Amemiya’s knives has frogs on them.
- Gaku Maruko’s gatling gun has a jellyfish on it.

- Shouma Ginzaki and Moko Mojiro are the only characters to share similar Specialist Skill effects (gaining Attack for each attack they receive in the last turn). Shouma's Special Shut-In is slightly better due to it also preventing status effects.
- Currently, the only known numbers on the students' armbands are:
- Takumi Sumino: 零 (0)
- Takemaru Yakushiji: 壹 (1)
- Hiruko Shizuhara: 貳 (2)
- Darumi Amemiya: 參 (3)
- Eito Aotsuki: 肆 (4)

- Kyoshika Magadori: 什貳 (12)
- Yugamu Omokage: 什參 (13)
- Moko Mojiro: 什肆 (14)
- The order of these numbers are also the same order as they're presented in on the 'Characters' section of the official website, as well as the order of the student profiles in the handbook.[8]
- Note that Nozomi is not wearing a typical uniform.[7]
- However, it can be deduced that her number would likely be 拾 (10). Additionally, the most common kanji form of 10 is 十, which looks like a plus, a symbol commonly associated with health and places of medicine such as pharmacies, possibly tying into Nozomi's role as a healer.
- Everyone except Takumi uses a less common kanji form of their number, using a version of the kanji typically used in legal documents instead.
- Hiruko's significantly more developed stats on her Class Weapon implies that she has been using Hemoanima longer than any of the other students.
- The phonetic reading of Hemoanima (我駆力) in Japanese (gakuryoku) is the same as 学力 (gakuryoku), meaning "academic ability".
- The class armor resemble the gakuran and sailor fuku uniforms, which are worn by middle-school and sometimes, high-school students in Japan. These outfits also resemble military uniforms worn by the American and European naval army.
